The legend of Australia’s most celebrated wine, Penfolds Grange, is one of invention, passion, risk, and determination.
The story began in 1950, when Max Schubert’s visit to Bordeaux sparked an idea – to create an Australian wine “capable of staying alive for a minimum of twenty years.” This dream led to the first experimental Grange vintage in 1951, a bold new style that challenged tradition.
Although initially dismissed, Schubert’s persistence saw him secretly continue production, shaping what would become an iconic wine of unrivalled depth, longevity, and character.
One Man’s Dream
Inspired by Bordeaux’s great wines, Max Schubert returned to Australia with a vision: to craft a full-bodied, balanced red wine with extraordinary aging potential. Using shiraz fruit from Magill Estate and Morphett Vale, and combining both tradition and scientific innovation, Schubert produced the first Grange. Its name pays tribute to Grange Cottage, the original home of Penfolds founders Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold.
Today, Penfolds Grange stands as a symbol of Australian winemaking excellence – a collector’s masterpiece available at Porter’s Lux.
